Cringe comedy takes a whole new direction with the wonderfully weird Hulu series, “PEN15.” This is a series that easily could have been awful, but it is genuinely funny in its discomfort. Sometimes the show is too uncomfortable, but it is so clearly what the show is aiming for, it is enjoyable in its own way. The show is also self-aware with two fully grown adults portraying middle schoolers and honestly, it just adds more to the comedy. What is even more surprising than the show being funny is how painfully heartfelt and even sad it gets sometimes. It’s hard to ignore the solid writing of the series and for those looking for a comedy that truly embraces its quirky premise, this is a unique choice that I think gets better in the second season and is ultimately worth the watch.
