Admittedly, I wasn’t very familiar with Jerrod Carmichael before this new HBO special, “Rothaniel.” This is yet another intimate comedy special that truly proves that it can be impactful as an art form. This special does have some good jokes but it is not really about comedy. The use of honest storytelling here is top-notch and I was consistently engaged with what he was here to see. Overall, this is a quiet yet powerful comedy special that shines because of its personal nature and important subject.
