“Dear White People” is most definitely a series focused on getting social commentary out there before anything else, and that’s why it likely won’t be for most audiences. I think the show raises important topics, but its complete lack of subtlety can make it an iffy watch at times. I still think the show has great characters that keep things interesting and their individual conflicts are engaging. As a series about college students, it’s pretty solid, and as social commentary, it is certainly important, but not the most nuanced. Overall, I wouldn’t say this is a must-see series, but it is still a good one with plenty of discussion topics presented. I would also say the first two seasons are the best and if you’re not sold by then, the series likely won’t win you over with its third or fourth seasons.
